How Our AI Identifies Tree Species with 100% Genus Accuracy

Species identification is the cornerstone of any tree inventory. Getting it right is essential for proper management, risk assessment, and ecological planning. Here is how our dual-source AI pipeline achieves industry-leading accuracy.
Our system combines two independent identification sources: the Pl@ntNet botanical recognition API and a multimodal large language model (Anthropic Claude) that analyzes tree photos using visual reasoning. When both sources agree on genus, we have extremely high confidence in the result.
We validated our pipeline against 47 real tree photos from iNaturalist covering 12 common Austin street tree species, including Live Oak, Cedar Elm, Ashe Juniper, and Pecan. The result: 100% genus accuracy across all test specimens.
This dual-source consensus approach is what sets Urban Pulse apart. Rather than relying on a single model that might fail on unusual specimens, we require agreement between fundamentally different AI architectures before confirming an identification.
